“Summaeverythang Community Center will serve as a vibrant, utopic nucleus where youth can gather, chill, grow and thrive. I’m creating a space that will center their lived experiences while nurturing their infinite potential—artistically, athletically,  and  intellectually. It’s about the future of children in our community.”

“All of the resources, workshops, and inroads to access that Summaeverythang offers come out of the neighborhood. There is brilliant talent right here to build out education, SAT prep, ACT prep, music, art, yoga, and more. It is all happening in South Central at a high level—but the community doesn’t know it exists. Summaeverythang’s vision is to bring it together at SCC with local practitioners. We want to build kids’ self-esteem and have them have a sense of pride in their neighborhood. Give them the opportunity to learn from local figures who are excellent in their fields. There is so much talent that came out of this community. Now they can give back.”

HISTORY

HISTORY

Born out South Central Los Angeles native Lauren Halsey’s concern for her community, Summaeverythang was originally meant to function as a gathering place of a kind Halsey began imagining years earlier as a student at El Camino Community College. In late 2019, when a space next to Halsey’s South Central studio became available, she leased it to put her vision into action, offering free, high-quality programming in art, education, and wellness.

By spring 2020, witnessing the disproportionate and adverse impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on employment and food security in South Central LA, despite being a new organization, Summaeverythang swiftly adapted to meet urgent community needs. Through strategic partnerships with Southern California farms, SCC distributed over 18,600 boxes of organic, seasonal produce, Summaeverythang’s food distribution program fed thousands of community members, completely free of charge.

Each Wednesday, the Summaeverythang team picked up produce at the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market and a dedicated team of volunteers showed up the following day to assemble over 600 produce boxes. Box contents changed weekly and ranged from assorted leafy green varieties and fresh herbs to organic berries and eggs. The initiative, acknowledged by Councilman Joe Buscain of the 15th District, highlighted Summaeverythang’s commitment to supporting the community in times of crisis. The food distribution program ran from June 2020 until the end of 2021. This effort demonstrated SCC’s capacity for rapid response and deep-rooted care.

By both celebrating and archiving Black cultural expressions, Halsey’s work offers a form of creative resistance to the forces of gentrification. In addition to the signs and symbols of contemporary South Central, Halsey employs the iconography of ancient Egypt as a means of reclaiming lost legacies. She is also inspired by the Afrofuturist aesthetics of funk music and the utopian architecture proposed in the 1960s by Archigram and Superstudio.

Halsey received a BFA from California Institute of the Arts (2012) and MFA from Yale University (2014). Her work has been showcased in prestigious institutions worldwide. Recent solo exhibitions include Serpentine Galleries (2024); the 60th Venice Biennale (2024); The Metropolitan Museum of Art (2023); Seattle Art Museum (2022); Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2021), and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2018).

FOUNDER

Artist. Visionary.  Funkateer.South Central Archivist.

Lauren Halsey has centered her practice around art, architecture, and community engagement. Her work addresses crucial issues confronting people of color, queer populations, and the working class.

Born, raised, and based in South Central Los Angeles, where generations of her family have lived since the 1920s, the notion of community has been central to Halsey’s art from the start. Halsey creates immersive installations that bridge sculpture and architecture, and graphically maximalist collages that blend real and imagined geographies. Her work pays homage to the rich history, culture, and community of South Central, which is currently undergoing a major transition, as mass development and new residents restructure the local economy and neighborhood. She recontextualizes and reinterprets local vernacular sources such as flyers, murals, signs, and tags—icons of pride, autonomy, initiative, and resilience. Halsey holds a strong commitment to South Central, and it serves as an ongoing inspiration for her work.

We aim to serve South Central Los Angeles, a historically rich and resilient neighborhood facing ongoing socio-economic challenges. South Central is home to a diverse population, including African American, Latinx, and other ethnic communities, each contributing to its cultural fabric and identity.

A vast region comprising 28 neighborhoods, South Central Los Angeles has historically faced disparities in access to educational resources, economic opportunities, and recreational spaces. Our project is designed to address these challenges by providing the community with educational programs, job training initiatives, and cultural events that celebrate and preserve the neighborhood's cultural heritage.

FOR US, BY US

Founded by multidisciplinary artist Lauren Halsey in 2020, In a pioneering move that merges the worlds of art, community, and social enterprise, Summaeverythang Community Center (SCC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to social transformation in South Central Los Angeles. With deep familial ties to the area dating back to the 1920s, Halsey is committed to reshaping the community through a multifaceted approach that centers around three main pillars: arts, education, and wellness.

SCC offers free after-school, weekend, and summer programs to local youth that center the experiences of Black and Brown families. The Center provides high-quality mentorship, creative training, and community-building opportunities that strengthen cultural pride and self-determination. SCC nurtures emerging artists, fosters intergenerational exchange, and provides accessible spaces for learning and imagination. Each pillar and each program reflect the belief that access to creativity and education is a fundamental right and a tool for transformation, helping residents build lasting networks of care, knowledge, and opportunity.
