The building

“Summaeverythang will be a space to engage with the neighborhood, with children, and it will develop as a traditional—but experimental—community center.”

-Lauren Halsey, Founder

The ultimate realization of the Summaeverythang Community Center will be a permanent building in South Central. Located five minutes north of the Watts Towers, this beautiful, new space will be committed to fostering personal growth, artistic potential, educational opportunities, and holistic well-being for local youth of all backgrounds. With a focus on the "whole student" Summaeverythang Community Center will offer services that empower young people multi-dimensionally and support their journey to graduate from high school and successfully transition to college that includes vocational training programs and apprenticeships. Modern and inviting, the center will serve as a cornerstone of empowerment and resilience for generations to come.

The new center will be an open-ended, flexible space that shifts to meet the needs of the communities around it. The building will feature 4,000 square feet of indoor space, including classrooms for arts (ceramics, sculpture, music), education (tutoring, college prep), and wellness, and an art gallery space.

2,100 square feet of outdoor space will feature the Funk Garden, a yard beside the center where sculptures and plants will coexist, and a sports court for beginner and advanced athletic programs.

“I call it Summaeverythang, some [of] everything, because I think it’s everything the community needs that we made the space in response to. I thought when I got that space that I would create all of these really high-level elite, funky, cool moments, activities, workshops, and symposiums that folks without access—kids, mostly young adults—could be involved with seamlessly. Everything from homework and reading and having a personal tutor Monday through Saturday to having a music studio and music classes, having a film program with production classes, taking kids to surf camp—just all the beautiful things, and being there consistently as an institution in our neighborhood. Hopefully forever, and always free, and hopefully existing as a place in children’s lives until they are young adults, when we’re still helping them and nourishing their health and success through college, through resumé-building, and through job placement.”

SCC is building a space for creation, nourishment, and self-determination—fueled by ART and fueled by FUNK. As the access point, art serves as a major vehicle, unlocking other positive outcomes for students—most importantly improved wellness and expanded career pathways.

Scheduled to be completed by 2028, Summaeverythang Community Center’s new building is where neighborhood children will get what they want and need—the freedom and independence to explore and reach their own potential.

We invite you join us in supporting the construction of Summaeverythang’s permanent home.
